Does Online Dating Really Work?

In the good old days of parties, bars, and even blind dates, you had the chance to check out the chemistry between you and that prospective hottie in the flesh. But times have changed and so have you – and with the advent of Internet dating, the old rules are all turned around. So what’s the skinny on online personals? Can soul mates really find each other on the vast plains of World Wide Web?

Peter: As a forty-something divorced guy with two kids and a busy career, the idea of going out to bars to meet women was the furthest thing from my mind. While I dearly wished I had someone special in my life, I had no idea how to make it happen. When a buddy from work mentioned he’d posted his profile on an online personals site and was getting responses, I thought, "that’s fine for him, but I’m just not the personal ad type." But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. I mean, how else was I realistically going to meet anyone? So I went ahead and posted a profile. After a couple of coffee-dates that didn’t really click, I’ve met a woman I think is really pretty special. I’ve invited Jill to go to dinner this Saturday, and I’m beginning to believe that online personals can really be right for someone in my situation.

Ron: I had transferred to a new city for my job. But as a gay man, I was unsure of the territory – how safe was it to be out? Where could I meet guys to hang out with, and date? For me, online personals were the perfect solution. Within a few days of posting my profile, I was having several online conversations with other gay men in the area. They not only turned me on to some great gay hangouts in town, I also met Carlos online – and we’ve been dating for four months. Online personals were the key to my getting settled in a new place, and meeting a great guy who I’m really crazy about.

Helen: A die-hard workaholic, I thought I didn’t have the time or the charm to be in a relationship. But I was also lonely. On my 35th birthday, I vowed to turn over a new leaf, and bring some fun and romance into my life. Just posting my profile was quite an experience! Coming up with a photo I could live with, being forced to sit down and write about myself – it really made me think about who I am and what I have to offer. And once I started getting responses, it made me feel interesting and desirable. The funny thing is – I didn’t actually end up seriously dating anyone I met online, but with my confidence running high, I began attracting a different kind of attention out in the real world. I ended up meeting a terrific guy at a regional conference, and we’ve gotten really serious about each other. Even though we didn’t actually meet online, I’m convinced my attempts at online dating ultimately led me to find John.
